There are times, when the memory of a vacation feels immediate. Watching sunlight break morning across white sheets. Warm coffee cupped in cold hand by a window. Those sensory memories are such a comfort. They never fail to make me smile. I’ve come to collective refer to them as my happy place.
Yesterday, I came across a few images from Centerboard Inn. Instantly, I remembered the feeling of being there and it got me thinking. What is it about a place, an inn, a bed and breakfast, even a nice hotel that makes it so comfortable, relaxing so memorable?
It goes beyond the basics of location, bright light, a good bed and purposeful design. For me, it’s about a sense of place. Staying where there is history. History that is remembered and respected by the current keepers. History that is felt by all who visit. It’s this sense of place that makes the Centerboard Inn one of the best places to stay in Nantucket.
Whaling drove the first Nantucket boom in 1672. Although the attraction is now tourism, much of Nantucket holds onto a sense of that history. Once a whaling captain’s home, the Late Victorian Era Centerboard Inn’s construction combined with modern coastal design invite you to stay a while.
Our eight minute walk from the Nantucket Ferry to the Centerboard Inn had been surrounded by falling leaves and a nip in the air. Right after checking in, I had a warm cup of coffee in my hand and a view to relax by. High ceilings and tall windows let in sunlight and all the charm Nantucket is famous for.
The coastal design morphs to nautical-chic in the bedrooms. With our budget, our room was the coziest of the seven available. Yet it still had everything we needed. A flat-screen TV, cable, free WiFi, iPod docks and a mini-fridge. Even things we didn’t expect like Malin + Goetz toiletries. I felt downright spoiled. This was truly the cutest little room, we’ve ever stayed in.
Breakfast is beyond continental and after walks in the afternoon, wine and cheese reception are complimentary. When you take that sense of place and add considerate hospitality, friendly staff and cookies in the afternoon, you tap into the creature brain. Send signals to relax. That to me, is what makes the Centerboard Inn one of the best places to stay in Nantucket.
