This Artwork Monday is a look at Costa Rica through photography and Art. A quick tale of how the Pura Vida Effect of Costa Rica turned a romantic vacation into a life-changing experience.
Art and Photography by Paolo Ferraris.
A newly engaged, nature starved couple taking a vacation to celebrate our future together.
Our plan. A cross-country road trip in Costa Rica. Volcano Arenal to the Cloud Forest of Monteverde to Playa Samara, finally ending in Montezuma. After which, we would return home to the New York grind.
Those who have been, can already spot our naivety. Driving led to many unplanned adventures, because roads go missing in Costa Rica!
Despite a few challenging experiences, we were in paradise. Daily walks through nature let our conversations take flight. We were love birds planning a future.
Everything around us seemed magical, moments Paolo captured in my face.
We were enchanted, with each other, with getting back to nature.
Everywhere we looked, nature was inspiring. We saw plants and flowers all around. Saturated colors we had never seen in nature before.
With over 10,000 species, Costa Rica has an astounding array of native plant life. Unique animals and insect species number 615, put Costa Rica at the top of the list.
We were New Yorkers reconnecting with nature. Creatures of the forest came out as if to congratulate us.
As we walked the plants reached out, as if to shake our hands.
The Red-Eyed Tree Frog came out from under his leaf to toast our engagement at lunch.
Volcano Arenal puffed its approval outside our window.
Not even rain in Monteverde could dampen our spirits.
We were walking on water.
There was no turning back, these New Yorkers were building a life together, one bound to freedom, travel and each other.
Paolo captured this moment, this memory…
After spending time reconnecting with nature, we could no longer see ourselves returning to New York City for good. We knew now, that nature would serve as an inspiration for Paolo’s art.
We witness a Pura Vida lifestyle, one of simplicity that called to us. Calculating our costs along the way made us realize what we spent in New York City for a dark, cramped one bedroom, would buy us an ocean front view in Costa Rica.
Such are the passing dreams of vacationers. Right?
Well not entirely.
Paolo a photographer worked for himself. He could work anywhere in the world. He had dreamed of a life of travel. It was my career in New York, holding us back. A career that gave increasing chest pains and decreasing satisfaction by the day.
On our final morning in Montezuma, a fateful seaside moment of contemplation lead to a decision to change the trajectory of our lives.
It was time, to re-imagine life, outside of the Big Apple. The idea of returning home and disconnecting from nature, from myself no longer held appeal.
I let go in that moment in favor of a Pura Vida lifestyle.
We never looked back. The road had been our home ever since.
Costa Rica Inspired Art
On this trip Paolo photographed the light dancing between leaves, nature’s color pulsating with life all around. Images he would later turn into Flores Tropicals series for Paolo Ferraris Colors.
Thus is the power of nature, a muse for Artists.
A little romance, a lot of trust and a dash of optimism gave birth to Art and a new way of living. Since that time, I’ve learned, when facing a cross-road to turn to nature. It is here, that I find the peace of mind and confidence to trust, what’s truly in my heart.
