Happy Autumn Equinox and 265th day of the year my friends! Only 100 days left in 2020! If that doesn’t lift your spirits, hopefully our Italy Pic of the Day from Verona, Italy will.
Doesn’t this photo of the walls of the Verona Area just make you want to go outside, lay in the grass and cloud gaze all afternoon. Remember those days? Hours spent watching Mickey Mouse morph into a gummy bear, into a horse, and into a heart. I miss those stress free days of summer don’t you?
Curious to know more about the Verona Area? Read on my friend!

Verona Arena History
The Verona Arena was a Roman amphitheater built 2,000 years ago in the middle of the first century AD. It’s located in Piazza Bra, the largest piazza in Verona.
The Verona Arena is the third largest arena in Italy and is prized as one of the best-preserved ancient structures in the world. My favorite part? Unlike the Colosseum in Rome, it’s far less touristy, and it’s pink!

Made of stones from the surrounding Valpolicella region, on bright sunny days the Verona Arena has a pinkish glow.

Originally the outside of the Verona Arena had three tiers of arches until a major earthquake in 1117 caused the outer wall to collapse. There is only one small section of the original exterior wall called “wink” still in tact and it stands nearly 100 feet tall!
Verona Arena Events
The elliptical shape gives the Verona Arena excellent acoustics. Personally, I’m obsessed with the idea that while Romans built the arena for bloody battles between Gladiators and wild animals, Bruce Springsteen, Leonard Cohen, and Pearl Jam all got to slay where Gladiators once stood.
Fingers crossed COVID is under control in time for the next Verona Opera Festival, June 19th, 2021. Remember when we could all go to concerts together? If you could see any band past or present in the Verona Arena, who would you want to see? Let me know in the comments below!
This ones for you Paolo!
