Florence is one of the last cities left in Italy to turn street lights on manually. While that sounds a bit antiquated when it comes to all 47,000 street lights in Florence, it’s actually just the opposite. It’s about money, stars, and LEDs.

Having been in Florence, tipsy and stuffed with bistecche fiorentine I’ve always felt there is some kind of magic to Flo at night. It never would have dawned on me part of that magic is a careful planning balance between light pollution and safety.
At 100€ a minute, I wouldn’t be surprised to see Matteo Casanovi telling Florentines to “turn the light off when you leave the piazza!” Would you believe there are 42 different types of LED lights used throughout Florence to cast just enough light for variations spaces like piazzas, gardens, narrow, and wide streets.
